UNEP Africa Regional Children‘s Conference — Durban, South Africa

Organised in partnership with UNEP, members of the Junior Board, British Council, SA Ministry of Environment, eThekwini Municipality amongst other partners; the African Regional Children‘s Conference will take place in Durban, South Africa in August 2009.

The Conference will bring together children from all parts of Africa to learn about and voice their concern for the environment. About 60 children from African countries, including 20 from South Africa, will participate in the conference.

The Africa Conference will prepare the children for the "Tunza International Children‘s Conference" that is going to take place in Daejeon, Korea, from 17—21 August 2009.

The Conference daily themes include: Energy and Climate Change, Waste and Climate Change, Biodiversity and Climate Change. Environmental issues that are pertinent to the Africa region will also be discussed.

The outcome of the conference will be a set of commitments by the children on the environmental actions they will undertake on returning home and a message to the Korea Conference on the views and concerns of the African child on climate change. This message will form part of the children‘s statements to be presented to the UN Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change.
